Tokyo interior and lifestyle fair 2009
Tunto recently participated in the annual Tokyo Interior and Lifestyle Fair, held in Tokyo on 3-5 June 2009.
Our new LED lamp was a huge success at the fair. We got a lot of attention and praise, including an interview for the Japanese television.
We believe that Tokyo and Japan are the best places in the world for the new LED lamp. LED combines traditional woodwork and new technology; these are just the things that are best combined in Japan. Plus, this combination is exactly what makes our new lamp so interesting.
A huge thank you to our agent Mr. Atsushi Hoshi and his staff!
Included are a few photos from Tokyo and from the high-class department store Isetan, where our products can be found.

Tunto’s new LED lamp nominated for prestigious German design award
The LED lamp, designed by the Finnish design company Tunto, has been nominated for the Deutsche Designpreis design award. The award is one of the most coveted and prestigous design awards in the world, and can only be awarded to unique products that represent the best of the best in product design.
Companies or designers cannot enter for the award by themselves. Deutsche Designpreis is an invitational competition, to which the entrants are nominated by the Ministries and Senators for Trade & Industry of the German States or by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. Another precondition for entry is that the product must have already been awarded a national or international prize. No other Design Award sets its entrants such strict criteria, thus making the award one of the most highly regarded design awards in the world.
The Deutsche Designpreis is given for outstanding achievements in the fields of product and communication design, and to a personality in the design sector. The jury is made up of representatives from industry, the universities, the design world and the media.

Hi, Mikko! Congratulations on the great accomplishment! The Tunto LED lamp features a brand new kind of touch-sensitive technology. Could you tell us more about it?
-Thank you! A couple of years ago I got to know a company that was developing touch-sensitive switches. I contacted them and asked if the technology could be adapted in wood, instead of metal. ..........
Actually, it makes you feel a bit like a spaceman: it combines wood with touch-sensitive technology.
Where were you, by the way, when you found out that you had won?
– I logged on to my e-mail and the news was there. With a big smile on my face, I just had to go and get some champagne and chocolate cake! That day, the coffee break was a bit different from the usual. At the moment, it was the best lamp in the world, and the award couldn’t have come at a better time!

The latest Tunto innovation, the ground-breaking LED lamp combines modern technology, wood and simple design language in a creative way that drops jaws and leaves a lasting impression. This lamp is really all about the Tunto design philosophy: the hidden touch-sensitive switch gives the user a true feel of the material and finishing of this unique product.
To put it simply: LED is not just about the beautiful design, it’s also about the rewarding sense of touch that makes you want to turn it on, time and time again.
LED comes in various types of wood oak and walnut and several different colours.

Tunto has won one of the most prestigious and coveted design awards in the world – the international RED DOT DESIGN AWARD – with their new, groundbreaking LED lamp, designed by Tunto owner and founder Mikko Kärkkäinen.
The LED lamp – operated by gentle touch, containing no visible switches – received the award in the red dot award’s Product Design category. The products that compete in the category are evaluated according to the highest standards, by an international jury made up of renowned designers and design experts from all over the world.
The adjudication process follows a canon of strict criteria, which is constantly adapted to the latest findings in formal, technical, manufacturing, societal, industrial and ecological requirements. The applied criteria are eg. degree of innovation, functionality, ergonomics, durability, ecological compatibility and quality.
The red dot design award guarantees visibility in the global market, with the “red dot” label enjoying recognition worldwide as a seal of outstanding performance. The award is as a seal of quality; it stands for membership of the best in design and business.
“The world’s best lamp in the company of the world’s best products – we couldn’t hope for a better recognition”, says Mikko Kärkkäinen about the award.

The Tunto products have been gaining growing attention among the public. We receive press and consumer inquiries on a daily basis. Last year we put special emphasis on marketing, partaking in such important events and places as the Stockholm Fair, Paris, Interior Design Today, Maison & Object Show Preview 07, Tokio Fair 07 and the New York Design Week.
This year we are concentrating more and more on production, delivery and quality. The situation is excellent for this, as we acquired more room for our operations in the end of last year. A few new products will be lauched this year.
As we draw near to the end of the first decade of the new millennium, things look good for Tunto. The world is waiting for modern, inspiring design items that have a respect for traditional handwork and materials. This is where Tunto steps in. We are already going where no design company has gone before – expect us to lead the way to the next decade of modern design as well!

Tunto Design / Workshop haluaa omalta osaltaan ottaa vastuuta ympäristöasioista ja yhtenä osana näistä asioista se tehnyt sopimuksen Mepak-Kierrätys Oy:n kanssa metallisten maalipakkausten ohjaamisesta hyötykäyttöön.
Ympäristövaikutuksia on selvitetty
Jokaisessa metallipakkauksessa on yli neljännes kierrätettyä materiaalia.
